Course P550 – Pistol Instructor is a four-day (40 hour) course of basic pistol instruction that is designed specifically for seasoned shooters who are in a position to teach others. The course focuses first on the expert employment of the magazine-fed semi-automatic sidearm and then transitions to the skills necessary to effectively plan and conduct firearms training.
Students in this course participate in guided instruction, practical exercises, peer review, as well as live-fire examinations. Tactics and techniques covered include safe employment, shooting from cover, shooting while moving, tactical reloading, and marksmanship mastery at intermediate distances. Students will be led through intensive exercises that allow expert performance with the sidearm and then taught how to teach that skill to others. The end-state of the course is students who can not only perform at a level above simple proficiency with semi-automatic pistols but who can effectively plan and lead training classes as well.
All students are expected to be seasoned shooters with above average proficiency before attempting this course. Throughout the duration of its four-day format, students will build upon their experience to master topics that include marksmanship, pistol tactics, planning, presentation, and course design. All students must pass a written and practical proficiency exam in order to graduate from the course. Admission into the course is conditional upon relevant experience as determined during an enrollment interview.
