Course P230 – Advanced Pistol is a two-day (16 hour) course of advanced pistol instruction that is suited for students who have a working understanding of how to operate an individual sidearm and who want to become proficient in its tactical employment. The course focuses on higher-order skills that build on basics already learned. This is a fighting class that teaches the use of the pistol as a defensive tool.
Students in this course participate in guided instruction, practical exercises, as well as live-fire examinations. Tactics and techniques covered include combat safety, fighting stance, looking for trouble, shooting from cover, shooting while moving, shooting from non-standard positions, tactical reloading, and marksmanship at intermediate distances. The end-state of the course for the student is repeatable proficiency in the employment of a pistol for defense.
All shooters in the class benefit from guided instruction by seasoned professionals who modify their approach to match the proficiency of the student. The structured format of live-fire practice drills allows shooters from varying backgrounds to each gain ability in the class; often at levels higher than they may have felt possible. Through the duration of its two-day format, the course begins with manipulation and handling drills that progressively add speed, distance, and complexity. The pace of the course is timed for mastery of the pistol and its employment by starting with bedrock fundamentals and then adding the dimension of decision making in the tactical environment.
